CHANEL: CRUISE COLLECTION, 2013
Where to begin? There are so many weird and random thoughts streaming through my head right now. So yes it was set in Versailles, so yes there is a rather strong Marie Antoinette under tone to this, albeit one where she’s just discovered Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Girls and so has travelled to Tokyo to discover their style secrets. Which naturally leads it’s way into some mention of Lolita, and admittedly if you blink, some of the outfits, well the white cotton dresses with pouffy sleeves, could be from the film. But it’s the hair that’s thrown up the most random association, that of Natalie Portman as pre pubescent assassin. Which lends the whole thing a certain toughness. A kind of child queen in revolt with a penchant for a granny shoe. A platformed trainer is a rather appropriate shoe choice for kicking ass. Much better than a stiletto. You’re much less likely to lose your balance and twist your ankle.
